TuS Vinnhorst: Handball, team spirit and partnership with ZAG

We spoke to Mika Säfken, captain, former national gymnast and media interface of the club, about team spirit, challenges and the fascination of handball.

From the gym to the handball court
Mika Säfken has been part of TuS Vinnhorst since 2016. „I started out in gymnastics as a competitive athlete and supported the club in the early years, especially in the national gymnastics league,“ he explains. Today, Säfken is active across all sports - including handball - and supports the club with his own media agency to increase media visibility. „For me, this is a real labour of love,“ says Säfken.

Handball as a dynamic team sport
„Handball is incredibly fast - something is happening all the time,“ says Säfken, describing the fascination of the sport. Despite the intense physical contact, handball is very fair and offers enormous potential, especially in terms of media perception. He finds it impressive how individual energy can be channelled in a team to make the seemingly impossible possible.

Memories and milestones
Promotion to the 2nd division was a special moment for Säfken. „I was able to witness the development both as an outsider and in the media. Promotion was a huge milestone for TuS.“ At the same time, he has followed the constant restructuring at the club, which is continuously advancing the sport and the organisation.

Challenges behind the scenes
According to Säfken, the biggest challenges in the Bundesliga often lie behind the scenes: „Behind the seven players on the pitch is a huge team of staff, organisation and volunteers. Keeping this large structure together and staying on the same wavelength organisationally is enormously demanding - and that is precisely where the art lies.“

The role of sponsors
Sponsors like ZAG are indispensable for the club. „They make it possible to pursue this intensive and ambitious path - both in terms of sport and infrastructure. At TuS, we consciously try to actively involve sponsors so that they are not just supporters, but become part of the team - almost like family.“

Parallels between sport and the world of work
Säfken sees clear links between successful teamwork in sport and in professional life: „It's about bringing together different characters, strengths and objectives, promoting them individually and focussing on a common goal. Growing together is absolutely crucial.“

A look into the future
For the future of handball at TuS Vinnhorst, Säfken hopes for maximum sporting success and, above all, good health. Structurally, he hopes for further reinforcement and the further development of the club's established structures. „Standing still is not an option in sport - or in the club.“
